Special Issue on "Internet of Things (IoT) in sustainable electricity and smart energy systems" Theme and Scope Internet of things has proven to be a useful tool to efficiently monitor and regulate energy consumption for industry and households. The term “Smart Energy Systems” have been used to express an approach that reaches broader than the term “Smart grid”. Where Smart Grids focus primarily on the electricity sector, Smart Energy Systems take an integrated holistic focus on the inclusion of more sectors including electricity, heating, cooling, industry, buildings, transportation and allows for the identification of more achievable and affordable solutions to the transformation into future renewable and sustainable energy solutions. Sustainable development aims to meet the economic, social and environmental needs of today society without sacrificing future generations’ needs and development. Reducing the greenhouse gas emissions as well as air and water pollution from electricity generation is a key component of achieving sustainable electricity.
