E^2S^2: A Code Dissemination Approach to Energy Efficiency and Status Surveillance for Wireless Sensor Networks
Abstract
Code dissemination is the process of a basic building block to enable wireless reprogramming in a large-scale wireless sensor network, where high message collision and lack of status report are two major challenges. In this paper, a code dissemination approach to Energy Efficiency and Status Surveillance, called E^2S^2, is presented to mitigate the message collision problem and support well dissemination using status report messages. Compared to prior work, the E^2S^2 has two features. First, a sender selection algorithm that only uses ADV messages to estimate nodes' impact helps to reduce possible collisions. A report algorithm is then presented with reduced number of report messages. The E^2S^2 has been implemented based on TinyOS and evaluated using TOSSIM. Compared to the default reprogramming protocol for TinyOS, Deluge, the E^2S^2 obtains 3% ~ 11% of performance improvement in terms of completion time and data traffic.
