QoS-Based Fast Handover Scheme for Service Continuity and Performance Improvement in MIPv6 Networks

Shin-Jer Yang,

Abstract

Owing to the fast technology developments of wireless communication and mobile computing, one of the most important issues to be created is the integrations of UMTS, WLAN, WiMAX and Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). While mobile nodes move between wireless networks, it will increase the possibility of service interruptions and radio link disconnections under different mobile networks. Many MIPv6 protocols have been proposed to manage the heterogeneous networks handover problems. Also, most of the MIPv6 protocols extend the Quality of Service (QoS) object option for setting up QoS negotiation and Service Level Agreements (SLA). The IEEE 802.21 MIH is designed to handle the hard handover problems which cause service interruption among network, transport and application layers on heterogeneous networks. Based on QDE, we propose IQDE to mitigate service interruption and improve the performance via the features including (1) Adding IEEE 802.21 MIH parameters; and (2) Adopting IQDE to shorten the QoS path reestablishment time for improving service continuity problems on the MIPv6. In this paper, we use the NS-2 2.29 NIST tool to perform simulations. Finally, our simulation results indicate that PFMIPv6 with IQDE can provide stable Packet Transfer Delay (PTD), and also obtain higher Throughput (TH) and lower Packet Delay Variance (PDV) about 18% and 14% than other two handover protocols, FMIPv6 and PFMIPv6, respectively.
