Antenna Design and Cell Division for HAPS Communication

Ming-Xiang Guan,
Le Wang,

Abstract

An information system formed by HAPS will be a new generation-system for wireless communications. The HAPS communication system combines the advantages of both terrestrial and satellite communication systems and avoids, to different extents, their disadvantages. A novel multi-layer ring cellular structure and smart antenna for HAPS communication is designed. The cell structure proposed will increase the width of the beam at the inner circle, reduce the width of the beam at the outer circle, and decrease the difference of signal to noise ratio between the inner and outer cells. The validity of ring cellular structure proposed is verified by theoretical analysis and numerical calculation of wireless link budget. Also, the complexity of the antenna design for engineering realization and the cost are both reduced by the multi-layer ring cellular structure, as laid out in this paper.
