Designing and Implementing a Dynamic Domain Name System for Wireless LANs

Abstract


Internet Protocol (IP) plays a major role in the evolution of networks and services; indeed, most of services delivered over the Internet are based on IP. A Domain Name System (DNS) serves network devices by mapping between an IP address and a domain name and network devices use the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to allocate/acquire dynamic IP addresses automatically. However, the Dynamic DNS (DDNS) combines both functions to map a dynamic IP address onto a fixed domain name. Presently, several organizations and firms provide the DDNS service over the Internet, but not for wireless mobile systems. Today’s business users must communicate with each other using any devices, at any time, anywhere. Consequently, wireless service systems have become prevalent. This work designs and implements a Wireless Dynamic Domain Name System (WDDNS) to extend the functionality of DDNS to wireless mobile systems especially by managing private IP addresses to enable mobile devices to roam in various domains with unique and fixed domain names in order to avoid call interruption.
