Network Capacity Based Geographical Forwarding for Multimedia Streams over MANETs

Abstract

To meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of multimedia streams, the Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) routing needs to improve the factors affecting the network capacity such as data delay, unpredictable node mobility, and network collisions. The existing routing protocols are inefficient to the delay sensitive multimedia applications due to lack of attention over dynamic network capacity. The network capacity is a vital factor for QoS depending multimedia applications. This work presents a Network Capacity based Router Selection (NCRS) for QoS provisioning in the MANET environment. The proposed work finds the feasible routers from the source to destination by considering the product of available bandwidth and delay. The proposed NCRS based geographical forwarding attains the QoS support via feasible router selection and queue size tuning according to the ratio of bandwidth utilization. It tunes the queue size to avoid frequent changes in the available bandwidth and delay product, and packet loss due to network collisions. The NCRS relies on both the routing layer and MAC 802.11 protocol to satisfy the QoS requirements. Finally, this work simulates and compares the proposed NCRS algorithm performance with the existing QoS-GPSR.
