English Reading E-Book System Integrating Grouping and Guided Reading Mechanisms Based on the Analysis of Learning Portfolios
Abstract
Developing e-book systems involving diverse reading assistance tools can help students improve their English proficiency regarding vocabulary, sentence patterns, and contextual comprehension. Moreover, encouraging students to use interaction and communication features in cooperative learning enhances their professionalism and command of the English language in addition to effectively enhancing their interests in learning English. Therefore, in this study, an English reading e-book system was designed. The Jigsaw learning strategy is adopted in the planning of teaching activities. In addition, to distinguish between groups as well as to provide articles that can fit personal cognitive ability, this study analyzed learner learning portfolio and applied the FOCUS algorithm to calculate the associations among learner behaviors. The derived associations were used in the grouping process. Furthermore, the learning portfolio was used for assessing article correlation, article difficulty, and learner ability, and a dynamic and real-time personalized article recommendation mechanism is subsequently provided in the proposed e-book system. The experimental results revealed that the students who used the e-book system involving the grouping and guided reading mechanisms demonstrated the highest learning effectiveness, and most students were satisfied with the English reading e-book system.
